Can My Trustee Charge for Phone Calls and Emails?

Question:

My trustee charges me for phone calls and responding to my emails – is this legal?

Response:

Yes, unless it adds up so much that a court would find the total charges unreasonable. Different trustees use different methods of billing. Some bill a percentage of the value of the trust, some for their time, and some use a hybrid approach. That said, if the trustee costs are eating up a big portion of the trust and you’re not getting your questions answered, then you may want to discuss the fees with the trustee or switch trustees. Another trustee might be a better fit.
